5.29 Chirp
‑
Based Measurement
Evaluation of the impulse response of a DUT for the stimulus signal generated by the
"Chirp" generator function.
When the DUT is excited by a logarithmic sine
‑
wave sweep as a stimulus signal by
means of the "Chirp" generator function, the chirp-based measurement can be used to
determine the frequency responses of the fundamental and all harmonics simultane-
ously. This results in a considerable time saving compared to the customary sweep
methods that perform a separate measurement together with evaluation of the harmon-
ics for each frequency sample. It is not possible to specify the precise time saving
because the chirp parameters have to be adjusted as precisely as possible to the fre-
quency range and the settling characteristics of the DUT in order to achieve the short-
est possible measurement times.
Owing to its short measurement time, "chirp
‑
based" measurement is of particular inter-
est for production applications. With the evaluation algorithms, attention was paid to
minimizing the measurement time while increasing the accuracy of the results.
