Too high setting of SEA clutter will also suppress small real targets.
High and automatic setting of ASC may also suppress HSC targets.
IMPORTANT
In extensive seaclutter it will not be able to suppress seaclutter in a way, to discriminate small
targets like fishing- and working boats ore pleasure crafts.
In traffic areas with opportunities to meet such kind of vessels or buoyages it is indispensable
to order a mariner to stay outside for eye watching to those kinds of targets.
ATTENTION
– regarding rain precipitation
If rain or other kind of precipitation makes it worse to detect targets, the use of S-band radar
will improve the target detection (see chapt. 7.11).
Note regarding SART and RACON targets!
High RAIN-setting may suppress SART- and RACON-indication. If those kinds of echoes are expected, RAIN
setting should be reduced from time to time.

Automatic Sea Clutter (ASC)
RADAR 4600 has a sophisticated video processor which combines Sea- and Rain- clutter plus some
additional features to improve those functions.
To get optimum settings for different sea status, three pre adjusted settings for
following conditions are selectable:
- [ASC Harbour] - harbour area
- [ASC Sea1] - normal open sea condition
- [ASC Sea2] - open, heavy sea condition
Click the button [ASC xxx] beside of [RAIN] and [SEA]
buttons. A popup window appears. There select the
appropriate function.
Note:
With activated ASC function, separate RAIN and SEA adjustment are not
available. But Gain is still working.
Regarding to the picture examples, now result is better, but the small echo
targets are not clear recognizable. – An improvement will be possible by using
the functions of Automatic Seaclutter Control - ASC.

Functionality of ASC
The software includes a configurable compensation curvature to compensate receiver characteristics which
is always active. The manual sea adjuster adapts this curvature to the actual situation.
An eminent feature of the RADAR 4600 ASC filter is the segmentation of the radar image into a huge
amount of squares which are computed separately. For each segment a correlation filter is active to
calculate an optimum setting. So, if only a part of image is affected by precipitation, only this part will get a
higher filter setting. Other parts of image will stay more sensitive.
