4.4 Channel Normalization
The channel normalization process is run automatically
on initial power up, but may also be initiated at any time
by the operator via the Normalization menu. The process
completes in approximately 30 seconds.
The channel normalization feature provides a method for correcting the output of each
analogue receiver channel for minor variations in amplitude and phase prior to input to
the beamformer to improve data quality. This is achieved by injecting a highly stable
calibration tone into each analogue receiver channel and comparing the output of each
channel to the average values for all the channels.
This produces a much „cleaner‟ input
to the beamformer thereby reducing sidelobes and improving performance.
NOTE
Data output is suspended while the normalization process is running. In certain
conditions the normalization may fail due to excessive noise or out-of-tolerance
channels. The operator is informed of the failure cause and prompted to use the last
normalization results.
Selecting Normalize will start the channel normalization process.
o
Clicking Cancel will return the display to the previous channel
normalization state.
o
The user is also given the option of retaining the previous channel
normalization, if the new one fails.
o
The Normalization Status display will update with new status once the
process is complete.
