Determining the tool center point (TCP) using the FocusMonitor FM+
The tool center point (TCP) is usually located on the beam axis on the focus plane.
1. Set up the FocusMonitor FM+ as de-
scribed in chapter 7.4 on page 18.
2. Install the FocusMonitor FM+ as de-
scribed in chapter 7.5 on page 20.
3. Perform an automatic caustic mea-
surement as described in chapter
4. Move the measuring carrier of the
FocusMonitor FM+ to the determined
focus plane as described in chapter
• The FocusMonitor FM+ moves the
reference plane to the focus position
(see figures in chapter 11.5.1 on page

5. Measure the Distance z between
the reference plane of the horizontal
carrier (see figure in chapter 11.5.1 on
page 39) and the reference plane
on the laser processing head.
6. Position the laser processing head at
distance z above the workpiece.
• Here z is the distance from the refer-
ence plane at the laser processing
head to the workpiece surface.
7. Specify a short laser pulse with low
output on the workpiece.
8. Align the reticle of the coaxial obser-
vation camera with the penetration
(x, y-position).
9. Use the reticle to align the laser pro-
cessing head with a known fixed point
in the machine coordinate system.
10. Set the correct working distances be-
tween the laser processing head and
the previously selected fixed point.
11. Apply the axis values for this position.
• The tool center point (TCP) has been
determined.
