6-10a. EXCESSIVE NOSE WHEEL SHIMMY
If excessive nose wheel shimmy develops during ground run, bring aircraft quickly to a stop and conduct
the following inspection.
a. Remove top engine cowling.
b. Raise the nose wheel free of ground contact.
c. Grasp the nose wheel and move wheel left to right; inspect for indications of looseness in the
steering assembly and the shimmy dampener.
1. Should looseness be indicated at the steering horn/strut attachment pin, inspect for hole
elongation on the steering horn.
2. If holes are found to be elongated, replace steering horn.
d. Additionally, in PA-32-260 S/N’s 32-7400001 thru 32-7400041, and PA-32-300 S/N’s 32-7440001
thru 32 -7440118 : (numbers in parentheses keyed to Figure 6-2)
1. Should any looseness be present at the shimmy dampener (5), steering horn (10), or steering
horn attachment pin (12), install Piper Kit No. 760-863V.
2. If Piper Kit No. 760-863V is not immediately available, install one (1) each P/N 407-584
washer (AN960-416L) between the top of the nose gear strut and the steering horn. Tighten the
0.25 inch bolt securing the safety wire to eliminate any rocking motion on the clevis pin.
e. Inspect the shimmy dampener for proper operation. During full extension and compression,
dampener shall exert uniform load. Should dampener not maintain uniform load, replace dampener.
f. Check the rudder cable tension per Table V-I.
g. Ensure nose wheel tire pressure is normal per Table II-I.
h. Make required logbook entries and return aircraft to service.
6-11. INSTALLATION OF NOSE LANDING GEAR. (Refer to Figure 6-2.)
a. Install the nose gear and engine mount assembly to the fire wall with bolts, washers and nuts.
Torque nuts as specifled in Torque Requirements, Section II of this manual.
