Opening valves rapidly can cause water hammer.
Water hammer can damage the pump and other water system components.
1. With pump engaged, water fed to pump, and hose connected, SLOWLY open discharge valve.
— Open and close discharge valves slowly to avoid a pressure spike in other hoses.
— OPEN discharge valve one-half OPEN until attack line is filled with water and air is escaped from hose.
— Observe personnel on the end of the attack line while the hose is filling.
2. Adjust discharge valve.
AFTER air is released from the line and water is flowing steadily from the attack nozzle, adjust the discharge
