STARTING & OPERATING
STARTING &
OPERATING
Introduction
Since each vehicle is
custom-equipped, all engine operation
instructions in this manual are general.
You will want to consult the manual for
your engine to find out details about
your specific engine’s needs. You
may need to use a slightly different
procedure from the one outlined here.
Below are instructions for both
normal-temperature starting and
cold-weather starting.
Normal Weather
When the outside temperature is
above 50° F (10° C), you can use the
following procedure.
1.
Set the parking brake.
2.
Put your main transmission in
Neutral.
3.
Disengage (depress) the clutch
(with manual transmission).
4.
Turn the key switch to ON.
CAUTION
Never operate the starter motor while
the engine is running. The starter
and flywheel gears could clash or
jam, severely damaging them.
NOTE
Some starters are equipped with
overcrank protection.
Check the
"Engine Operation and Maintenance
Manual" for details.
5.
Turn the ignition key to the START
position. If the engine does not
start within 30 seconds, release
the ignition switch. To avoid
overtaxing the starter motor or
the batteries, don’t use the starter
for more than 30 seconds. Let
the starter motor cool and the
batteries recover for two minutes
before trying again.
If the engine still won’t start after a
couple of tries, check the fuel lines
for possible fuel starvation or air
leaks. Starting failure may mean
fuel isn’t reaching the injectors.
6.
As soon as the engine starts, begin
to watch the oil pressure gauge.
