PART 6: DRIVER’S CHECKLIST
Safe Vehicle Operation
To keep your vehicle in top shape, and to maintain its high
level of safety for you, your passengers, and your load,
make a thorough inspection every day before you drive.
You’ll save maintenance time later -- and the safety checks
could help prevent a serious accident. Please remember,
too, that Federal law requires a pre-trip inspection and so
do commercial trucking companies.
For more information, you can refer to Federal Motor Car-
rier Safety Regulation 392.7 which tells you that interstate
commercial motor vehicles are not to be driven unless the
driver is sure that certain parts and accessories are in work-
ing order.
You aren’t expected to become a professional mechanic.
The purpose of your inspections is to
fi
nd anything that
might interfere with the safe and ef
fi
cient transportation of
yourself and your load. If you do
fi
nd something wrong and
can’t
fi
x it yourself, please have a quali
fi
ed mechanic
fi
x it
right away.
For your safety, as well as those around you, be a respon-
sible driver:
• If you drink, do not drive.
• Do not drive if you are tired, ill, or under emotional
stress.
Much has gone into the manufacturing of your Peterbilt,
including advanced engineering techniques, rigid quality
control, and demanding inspections. These manufactur-
ing processes will be enhanced by you—the safe driver—
who observes the following:
• knows & understands how to operate a vehicle and all
its controls
• maintains the vehicle properly
• uses driving skills wisely
