13.2 View system
The view system protrudes from the top of the AFM enclosure. It contains a software controlled
white light source and camera. It also has three user controls. Two levers for adjusting image bright-
ness and contrast, and a focus ring.
The focus ring is typically set at its detent (neutral) position, in which case the optical view in the
camera is focused in the same plane as the laser spot used to detect cantilever motion, which usu-
ally brings the back of the cantilever into focus. In most cases a focused view of the sample, and
not the back of the cantilever is desirable. During imaging, use the focus ring on the view system to
bring the sample into focus.
During the engage process, the ring should be returned to the detent position. A sensor will inform
the software if this is not the case and you will be warned before engaging to adjust the view sys-
tem focus if necessary.
