Uses of DP Growth
Healthy ears tend to show a shallow slope (linear growth of DP decibel
level with stimulus level) and low DP threshold values.
Ears with hearing loss tend to show a steeper slope and higher DP
thresholds.
Averaged over a group, DPOAE thresholds obtained in this way are well
correlated with hearing threshold ( Boege P, Janssen TH, J. Acoust Soc Am
2002; 111:1810-18). However, the prediction of actual hearing threshold for
an individual from DPOAE measurements is still very inaccurate.
One limitation is that the exact combination of L1 and L2 levels that gives
the greatest DP may vary between individuals. Another is that inner hair
cell sensitivity is a major factor in determining hearing threshold and
the status of these cells is not assessed by DPOAE. Conflicts between
any DPOAE estimate of hearing threshold and audiometric threshold
are therefore to be expected and may actually prove to be a valuable
diagnostic indication.
Changes in DP Growth at a given frequency may provide a more sensitive
means to measure cochlear change than a single intensity DP Gram.
