3.5 Triage: Reachback to the U.S. Department of Energy
The Fission Meter software guides you through the process of locating and collecting the data necessary for
expert analysis of suspect sources, and transmitting it to the proper authorities. The U.S. Department of
Energy has issued the following information statement:
“The US Department of Energy (DOE) provides ‘reachback’ radiological incident assistance 24 hours a day
seven days a week. Staff at the center can arrange for further analysis of characterization data sets by DOE
experts. In the first instance, the Fission Meter user should contact the DOE Emergency Operations Center
(Phone [1+] 202-586-8100) and ask to speak with the Emergency Response Officer (ERO). The user will be
placed in contact with the appropriate party within DOE to interpret the data and recommend appropriate
action.”
Figure 27 shows the Triage screen, which lists the entities to whom characterization files can be sent.
