Rooting the NOOK’s flash memory involves a several-step process. But the devil
is in the details, and each of these steps may be a lengthy, several-step process.
Make sure when you find instructions that you read any discussions about them,
in case people have uncovered problems with them, or have further advice. In
general, though, here’s what you’ll do:

➊

Download software to your PC.

➋

Use that software to create a disk image on a microSD card, and then
copy a file in the .zip format to the microSD card.

➌

Put the microSD card into your NOOK.

➍

Restart your NOOK and follow the onscreen instructions.

At that point, you’ll have Android 2.3 running on your NOOK, and you can then
use it like an Android tablet, including installing software from the Android
Market.

Unrooting Your NOOK

What if after you root your NOOK you decide you’d like to go back to the NOOK
software instead of Android? You may be able to do it. Again, do an Internet
search. Some people have reported success using an Android app called NOOK
Tablet unrooter. You download the app and then use it to unroot the NOOK. You
can find instructions and a file to download here:

. Again, though, keep in

mind that when you root your NOOK, you may or may not be able to unroot.
