D.2
Using Manual Techniques of Fault
Isolation to Diagnose Error Messages
Some faults cannot be isolated to a single FRU without performing manual steps to
help isolate the problem. For these types of failures, the fault diagnosis includes
multiple FRUs in the fault list.
The following sections provide additional details and suggested steps to locate the
problem FRU.
D.2.1
Error Messages and Fault Managed Resource
Identifiers
When a fault is diagnosed, a message is displayed on the console log. For example:
The
fmdump
utility can be used to retrieve fault diagnosis details associated with a

• Verify that there is no broken plastic lying inside the socket.
PCI card is difficult to install
on the carrier.
• The top of the card bracket must fit over the alignment post
inside the carrier front housing (
FIGURE 1-23
).
• The bottom of the card bracket might be hooked behind the
RFI gasket inside the carrier front housing (
FIGURE 1-24
).
• The bottom of the card may be hitting the alignment tab at the
bottom front of the carrier (lower detail in
FIGURE 1-22
).
* This refers to the horizontally-sliding card lock(s). The fitting of the vertically-sliding card lock(s) are less critical.
