Glossary (explanation of technical terms,
abbreviations and formula symbols)
Coefficient of adhesion
Ratio of wheel braking force to
wheel load.
Host computer
Higher order computer
K coefficient
Coefficient considering the influ-
ence of the center of gravity of the
vehicle on the braking response.
Communication display
Digital LCD display.
Pedal force measuring gauge
Serves for measuring the actuation
force of the braking pedal and the
parking brake.
Test weight, dynamic
Sum of the measured force due to
weight of the individual axes during
the braking action. (Before deacti-
vation of the motors)
Test weight, static
Sum of the measured force due to
weight of the individual axles, non-
operative or with rolling friction.
Tire shoulder
Lateral surface of the tire. (side-
wall)
Slip
If the braking force becomes high-
er than the friction force between
tire and testing roll, the wheel beg-
ins to „slip“ and wants to block
(speed difference in % between
wheel and testing roller).
Touch roller
Serves for acquiring the wheel
speed.
Dead load adjustment
Zero point compensation of the
weighing device taking the roller
set weight into account.
Permissible total weight
Corresponds to the data indicated
in the vehicle identification card
Abbreviations
SBS
Service braking system
BSU
„Bremsen-Sonder-Untersuchung“ (special brake test
prescribed in Germany)
(replaced by the safety test SP, only in the Federal
Republic of Germany)
Δ
Z
lh/rh
Difference between both accelerations with maximum
braking force
E
R
Distance between the trailer stud and the center of the
semi-trailer axle(s).
PBS
Parking braking system
F
Braking force between tire and brake test stand
1 daN = 10 N = approx. 1 kg
1 daN = 1000 N = approx. 100 kg
F
wheel
Braking force per wheel
F
VD
Force due to weight at the time of braking force determi-
nation
AUBS Auxiliary braking system
h
R
Height of center of gravity of semi-trailer above ground.
P
Vehicle weight
p
m
Pressure at the coupling head of the brake. Corresponds
in normal cases to ISO 1728, arrangement on the left-
hand side, facing forward. Colour code „yellow“. This
pressure is required as „neutral“ reference point between
the individual axles for evaluation.
p
z
Pressure at the testing connection of the brake cylinder of
the axle x.
p
spare
Pressure at the coupling head spare. Corresponds in
normal cases to ISO 1728, arrangement on the left-hand
side, facing forward. —Colour code „red“.
PR
Total static perpendicular force between the wheels of the
trailer or the semi-trailer and the ground.
PR
max
PR value for total weight of semi-trailer.
SP
Safety test (replaces BSU (special brake test))
Z
max
Heavier deceleration (braking)
