Maintaining the database
Configuring a network database backup
Introduction
You can back up the Symposium Web Center Portal database to a network
computer. This is done by sharing out a folder on the network computer,
assigning write privileges to a domain account on that share, and then running
the Backup service as that user.
To configure the network database backup
The Portal server in a Symposium Web Center Portal system must be a member
of a domain, and not a standalone server. The network computer to which you
want to back up your files must be on the same domain as the Portal server or
have a trust relationship set up between its domain and that of the Portal server.
When you perform a network backup of your Symposium Web Center Portal
database, you do not take the server off-line. The server remains in service and
copies the Symposium Web Center Portal database to a remote share point
location.
1
Select a user account. It should be a domain account from the Portal
server’s domain. This can be a new account (for example,
SALES\swcp_backup_user), or an existing one (for example,
EUROPE\johnsmith).
Note:
If you are creating a new account, ensure that the “User must change
password at next logon” box is cleared.
2
Create a shared directory on a drive on the network computer.
3
Ensure you have enough space for a backup of a full database (12 Gbytes).
Give “Full Control” on the shared directory to the domain user you chose in
step 1.
4
Confirm that the share is working correctly. Go to the Portal server and use
Windows Explorer to map a drive to the shared folder on the network
computer (the format is \\server\share). Click Connect using a different
name to specify the account from step 1. Ensure this share has not already
been mapped with a different username. When you connect, create a test
