Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 module fundamentals

The two 8692 SF/CPU modules share switch fabric functions for the
switch. If one 8692 SF/CPU module fails, the system reverts to operation
with a single 8692 SF/CPU module.

If you have two 8691 SF/CPU modules installed in your chassis, you can
upgrade to the 8692 SF/CPU module with a minimum loss of traffic.

For upgrade instructions, see Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch 8600
Upgrades — Software Release 5.0, NN46205-400.

CAUTION

Risk of equipment damage

Do not install a software version earlier than Release 3.5.6 on
the 8692 SF/CPU module. If you operate the 8692 SF/CPU
module with any release below Ethernet Routing Switch 8600
Release 3.5.6, this can damage the module.

CAUTION

Risk of data loss

Before you insert an 8692 SF/CPU in a Secondary SF/CPU slot,
make sure that the Master SF/CPU runs the required software
release.

8692 SF/CPU LEDs

The following figure shows the location of the 8692 SF/CPU module LEDs.

The Switch LEDs and the CPU LEDs indicate card activity. The Switch bar
graph increases as the switch fabric utilization increases. The CPU bar
graph increases when the CPU performs tasks, such as learning media
access control (MAC) addresses, updating routing tables, or interacting
with the device management station.
