Evaluating EDUs for Inclusion in the Summary SID List
During normal processing, the PCM-to-ID3 SDK may encounter bit-errors when decoding
watermarks. As a result, one or more of the fields in the decoded watermark may be
incorrect. We expect to see occasional bit errors among the EDUs. However, if the
number of erroneous EDUs exceeds the number of valid EDUs, there may be a problem
with the quality of the audio being presented to the PCM-to-ID3 SDK.
When processing a stream of ID3 tags, Validator frequently identifies the first few
watermarks with a specific SID as having an “undefined” level (marked “UK” in the EDU
line). Eventually the level is correctly identified as either PC or FD. When generating the
SID list, Validator includes the UK watermarks in the tally of watermarks with the properly
identified level.

Figure 7 – Tags.txt File
In example shown in Figure 9, the count for N2 FD SID
9999
is 5 because the level of the
third EDU is
FD
. The third EDU, as well as all subsequent and previous EDUs with the N2
SID
9999
marked as
FD
or
UK,
would be included in the tally of watermarks with SID 9999.
If SID 9999 is misidentified as a PC SID somewhere in the stream, Validator adds a
separate line to the SID listing. In the case where a SID is identified as both PC and FD
within a single stream, Validator adds the UK tally to whichever of the two entries has the
higher count. For example, suppose that Validator found that SID 9999 was represented
5 times as PC and later was identified 100 times as FD. Interspersed among the PC and
FD watermarks, there were 20 watermarks with SID 9999 that were identified as UK. In
this case, the Summary Report SID listing for SID 9999 would have 2 lines:
PC SID 9999: NAES 2 count = 5
FD SID 9999: NAES 2 count = 120
Watermarks with SIDs that are never represented as either PC or FD are not included in
the SID listing of the Summary Report.
