Creating a CDF on a Personal Computer
IMPORTANT:
CDF(s) transferred to the Digital Analyzer on a USB flash drive must be
inside a folder named CDFData to be recognized by the Digital Analyzer.
Creating a CDF Using the CDF Utility on a Personal Computer
Although a CDF can be generated manually on a computer, this manual process is error-prone due
to formatting problems as well as keyboard characters that are not recognized by the Digital
Analyzer (see section below). Because of these challenges, NanoString has created a macro-driven
Excel file with built-in instructions as well as safeguards to prevent the more common sources of

To create a CDF using the CDF Utility, open the file and click on Enable Content if the Security
Warning pops up in Excel.
The Utility has protected those cells that should remain blank and prevents the use of keyboard
characters that are not recognized by the Digital Analyzer. If you try to enter data in a protected
cell or use an illegal character, a dialog box will yield a pop-up message indicating one of these two
data entry errors.
