1.) To switch between the measuring units kp // cm
2
and lbs // inch
2
:
Press the <Set> key and the <Memo> key at the same time.
2.) To set the racquet Head Size:
Press the <Set> key and then the <Start> key. Hold the keys until the head size (or nearest) you
plan to measure shows.
3.) To measure the string bed:
Pull the
‘T’ piece
to its upper position. This will cause the ‘Hook’ on the back of the meter to extend
so that it can be hooked under the Centre Cross String. Squeeze the ‘T’ piece down to its lower
position with care.
It is important that it is clear of the main strings and in the very centre of
the string bed.
Dense string bed patterns may make this a little difficult. Use a blunt awl to
separate the strings and present the meter string hook diagonal to the separated strings. To
facilitate future measurement it is useful to mark the string you used to take the first measurement.
4.) Taking a reading:
Hold the racquet between thumb and forefinger as loosely as possible and let it hang down-wards
so that it is free to vibrate. Press <Start> and three dotted lines will appear on the dial. Slightly tap
the racquet head with your finger at about 3 o’clock.
This will cause the frame to vibrate and the meter will record the string bed tension
Too light a tap may not cause enough vibration for the meter to read. Too violent a tap will cause an
inaccurately high reading. Hence take care and try and evolve a tap that gives a consistent reading.
The reading will clear in 15 seconds, press the <Memo> button, it will re-appear.
Take at least 3 readings to ensure an accurate and consistent reading.
You can call up the last reading by pressing the <Memo> key (even after weeks).
IMPORTANT TO KNOW
It is unnecessary (and not possible) to switch off the meter. The Mini STT registers tension from 37
lb. to 77 lb. Tension below 37 lb will be shown with 35lbs (even if it is lower than that). The Mini STT
and all other string bed testers do not record a figure that is directly comparable with the stringing
machine reference tension. Scientific research shows that the string bed tension immediately after
stringing with a co-polyester string is 25% lower than the pull tension.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
Error: Display repeatedly reads 35 lbs;
1.
Your racquet is strung to a tension of less that 37lbs. The Mini STT registers tension from 37
lbs. in steps of 2 lbs. on.
2.
The Mini STT is picking up oscillations for which it has not been programmed. Repeat the
procedure by pressing <Start> and tapping the frame again. Repeat until you get a correct
reading.
Operating Instruction MINI STT
T-Piece
Hook
Tap
Error: No reading
1.
You have not pressed <Start>. There should be six lines visible on the display.
2.
You have pressed <Start> but there is nothing on the display. This might indicate that there is
a hairline crack somewhere on the racket frame. Check it out.
3.
The hook is not properly in place. Repeat the attachment procedure or select another string
for the hook.
4.
The tension of your racket strings is below 37 lbs.
5.
There are racquets that are very difficult to make vibrate. This can be due to material fatigue
in the frame, or if the racquet has just been restrung the strings may not yet have “settled
down”. Or, alternatively , the string you have attached the hook to is very tight and also soiled
with ash.
CHANGING BATTERIES
Battery type: s1154s or an equivalent like SR44, SR44SW, SR44W, 303, 313, 357, S76E.
Remove the middle screw of the three on the back of the housing. After having removed the screw
turn the housing so that the LCD is facing up. Slide out the battery compartment. Place one of the
batteries with its + sign downwards in the slot marked with a + sign. Place the other battery with its
+ sign upwards in the slot marked with a
–
sign. Looking inside the housing, you will see two small
metal plates. With a pair of scissors, open about have an inch, carefully touch both metal plates at
once to empty the capacitors. Slide the battery compartment back and secure it with the screw.
The batteries will be sufficient for approx. 4,000 readings in the course of a year.
WARNING / PRECAUTIONS
Keep the batteries out of the reach of children. If a battery is swallowed, consult a doctor
immediately. Never short-circuit, heat or otherwise tamper with the battery, and never
expose it to fire. The battery may burst, become very hot or catch fire. The battery is not
rechargeable. Never attempt to recharge it, as this may cause battery leakage or damage to the
battery. Change used batteries as soon as possible. Batteries should be changed every two years
regardless of how often the device has been used. The Mini STT contains precision electronic
components. Don’t twist or bend the Mini STT or subject it to extreme temperatures (below 41
° F
/+ 5°C or above 149°F / + 45°C), sudden temperature fluctuations or violent impact.
The manufacturer accepts no liability for damage to third parties or claims for damages by third
parties arising from the use of the product.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Use the string bed tester as a COMPARISON INDICATOR. That is, something that allows you to
compare the state of the string bed when you first measure it to the figure you get on subsequent
checks. Then it is a very useful tool.
The first check should ideally be immediately measured after the technician has completed the
stringing. This figure can be compared with any previous re-strings provided the string type and
material, reference tension and of course the racquet are the same each time. A change in any of
these conditions will affect the figures.
