5.2.1 Configuring the Switch DHCP Server
The switch contains an internal
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol
(DHCP) Server. DHCP can provide the dynamic
assignment of IP addresses automatically. DHCP is a protocol that includes mechanisms for IP address allocation and
delivery of host-specific configuration parameters from a DHCP server to a host. Some of these parameters are IP address,
network mask and gateway.
When a DHCP server allocates an address for a client, the client is assigned a lease (which expires after an interval defined
by the administrator). Before the lease expires, clients are expected to renew the lease to continue to use the addresses
assigned. Once a lease has expired, the client to which that lease was assigned is no longer permitted to use the leased
IP address.
To configure DHCP:
1. Select
Services
>
DHCP Server
from the main menu tree.
2. Select the
Enable DHCP Server
checkbox to enable the switch’s internal DHCP Server for use with global pools.
3. Select the
Ignore BOOTP
checkbox to bypass a BOOTP request.
4. Define an interval (from 1 -10 seconds) for the
Ping timeout
variable. The switch uses the timeout to intermittently
ping and discover whether the client requested IP address is already used.
5. Refer to the following as displayed within
Network Pool
field.
NOTE:
DHCP Server setting updates are only implemented when the switch is restarted.
NOTE:
When using the switch’s internal DHCP server ensure that traffic can pass on UDP
ports 67 & 68 between the switch and the clients receiving DHCP information.
Pool Name
Displays the name of the IP pool from which IP addresses can be issued to DHCP
client requests on the current interface. The pool is the range of IP addresses
available.
Network
Displays the network address for the clients.
