3. Use a piece of safety wire to loosen any blockage
or hardened grease at the threaded holes where the lu-
brication fitting was removed.
To completely replace one grease with another, the
propeller must be disassembled in accordance with the
applicable Hartzell overhaul manual.
-- CAUTION --
Over lubricating may cause the grease to enter
the hub cavity, leading to excessive vibration
and/or sluggish operation. The propeller must
then be disassembled to remove this grease.
-- CAUTION --
If a pneumatic grease gun is used, extra care
must be taken to avoid excessive pressure build-
up.
-- CAUTION --
Grease must be applied to all blades of a propel-
ler assembly at the time of lubrication.
-- CAUTION --
Use Hartzell propeller approved grease only. Do
not mix different specifications and/or brands of
grease.
NOTE:
A label indicating the type of grease used for pre-
vious lubrication is installed on the propeller cyl-
inder. If the propeller must be lubricated with
another type of grease, the propeller must be dis-
assembled and cleaned of old grease before relu-
bricating.
4. Pump 1 fl. oz. (30 ml) grease into the fitting located
nearest the leading edge of the blade or until grease
emerges from the hole where the fitting was removed --
whichever occurs first.
NOTE:
1 fl. oz. (30 ml) is approximately six pumps with a
hand--operated grease gun.
5. Reinstall the removed lubrication fittings. Torque
the fittings to 50 in--lbs (5.6 N
•
m).
NOTE:
Make sure the ball of each lubrication fitting is
properly seated.
6. Install a new lubricap on each lubrication fitting.
The following lubricants are approved for use in Hart-
zell propellers. Refer to Hartzell Propeller Owner’s
Manual for ambient operating temperature limitations:
Aeroshell 6 (Recommended “all purpose” grease)

1. Minor nicks, dents and gouges may be dressed out
by approved personnel. Blend any nicks or gouges into
leading edge with smooth curves or generous radii as
shown in (Figure 61--5). Repaint area per propeller
manufacturer’s recommendations to reduce corrosive
action.

RIGGING
1. Disconnect propeller governor control rod.
A. Remove cotter pin, nut, bolt and washers from
rod end at propeller governor control arm.
B. Disconnect control rod from governor control
arm.
2. Adjust control arm spring to minimum tension
which will return control arm to maximum RPM.
3. Push propeller control in cockpit, full forward. Pull
control back approximately 1/8 inch and lock in this
position.
4. Place governor control arm against high RPM stop
screw.
5. Adjust propeller control rod end to coincide with
governor arm position.
6. Attach control rod end to governor arm and replace
cotter pin.
7. Operate propeller control from cockpit to verify full
travel of control arm in both directions, high RPM to
minimum RPM stop.
NOTE:
When propeller control rigging is complete,
check controls in cockpit to be sure there is 1/8
inch cushion between control knob and adjust-
ment nut on instrument panel. The control
should not bottom out when pushed full forward.

Recheck safety wire, security and thread engage-
ment on all engine controls after adjustment, rig-
ging or assembly.
