Specifications and
profiles The AS-Interface is an open-standard system. A
mixture of ASi devices from different manufacturers
can be installed in the same network. This is ensured
by a technical specification which is maintained by
the AS-Interface User Organisation and supplied to
the respective device manufacturers.
The specifications describe the basic functionality
and minimum requirements of ASi devices.
Manufacturers must observe the specifications in
order to be awarded the ASi certificate. Additional
definitions and special device features for particular
slave applications are described in so-called
“profiles”.
A device profile is characterised by an I/O code and
an ID code.
When the sensor or actuator is manufactured, the
developer chooses a profile which describes the
required device function. The code is then stored in
the device in un-erasable form and also is specified
in the device documentation. The code allows each
device to be uniquely identified. ASi devices can be
replaced with devices with the same ID code and I/O
code combination without affecting functionality.
Special devices which meet the specifications but
cannot assigned to a specific profile are assigned the
default ID code of “F” (hex).
ID code
The ID code indicates the significance of the data
and parameter bits of the slave or user module.
It is used to differentiate between slaves with the
same I/O code.
