DIGITAL EXPANSION INTERFACE (DEI)
The following sections provide processes and procedures required for installing digital interface
equipment.
DEI Planning and Cabling
This section describes installing the Mitel Digital Expansion Interface (DEI) unit, the Digital Endpoint
Module (DEM-16), and the eight-port Single Line Module (SLM-8). Other digital telephone-related
items are also discussed such as Single-Line Adapters (SLA) and supported digital telephone
installations. Information on installing an external voice processing system is also discussed.
Installation Summary
Follow the new installation summary guidelines with any additions mentioned here. See
“Pre-Installation Checklist” on
• Run sufficient lengths of cable to any newly installed digital telephones and to optional equipment
for connection to the MDF. See page 152. Allow for adequate strain relief.
• Terminate the station cables on modular jack assemblies [line jack units] at the phone locations.

• On the MDF backboard, assemble any additional terminal blocks for digital telephones, including
SLAs. See page 153.
• Install the DEI chassis near the MDF in a Mitel or other rack. Also, mount the chassis in the rack
at a height appropriate for reading the Status panel. Allow room above and below the chassis
for later expansion. If wall-mounting is desired, contact the Mitel DataNet CommSource Division
for information.
