Mounting and Cabling the Main Distribution Frame (MDF)
The MDF is the point at which the station instruments, trunks, and auxiliary system equipment are
connected to terminal blocks [Krone blocks], or in the case of T1/PRI or E1/PRI trunks, modular jack
[line jack unit] assemblies are used instead. These terminal blocks [Krone blocks] connect to the
circuit modules in the CS Controller chassis. Connections
must
be made carefully and securely with
solid copper wire. Do
not
use stranded, or speaker, wire to connect phones to the system.
With a European system each module is normally supplied with 2-meter cable, but 4-meter cables
are available by special order. These cables are supplied with the appropriate number of Krone
blocks for the module type.
To simplify the MDF installation instructions, this manual outlines basic one block-to-one module
installation using bridging clips. However, it is quite acceptable, and in some situations more
functional, to use additional blocks, then cross connect between them.
To assemble the MDF:
1.
Mount a 4 ft x 6 ft (1.2 m x 1.8 m), ¾-inch (2 cm) plywood backboard at the MDF location.
Depending on the number of stations and trunks to be installed, a larger backboard may be
necessary.
2.
With a U.S. system, attach the 66M1-50-type terminal blocks to the plywood backboard. With
a European system, attach the Krone blocks to the plywood backboard. This includes blocks
for connecting CO trunks.
3.
If installing any T1/PRI and/or E1/PRI trunks, attach 8-pin, 8-conductor modular jack assemblies
to the MDF as required. For information on installing T1/PRI or E1/PRI trunks, see
Connecting CO Trunk Cables to the MDF
This section provides information on connecting Central Office (CO) trunk cables for the LSM-2 and
LSM-4 modules and the built-in loop start and single line ports. The built-in loop start and single line
ports provide CO trunk capabilities to the single line phones in addition to providing the power-fail
bypass functionality.
Connecting Trunks to LSM-2 Module Ports
For this procedure, see Figure 15 and Figure 16 on
as a guide.
To connect LSM-2 Module CO trunks:
1.
Cable the dual loop start port (CO trunks) using the pinouts shown in Figure 15 on
•
Use a patch panel at the rack and adapters between the patch panel and the Mitel 5000.
Use the fewest modular jacks and adapters possible, and do
not
attach any adapters to the
back of the chassis; clearance issues prevent them from attaching securely. If using a 6-pin,
NOTICE
Mitel will continue to support existing LSM-2s in the field, but new modules are no longer sold. For
connecting loop start trunks to the MiVoice Office 250, use the LSM-4 module, part number 580.2304,
or the T1/E1 module, part number 580.2700.
