IP Resources
On a Inter-Tel 5000 platform, IP resources are required for the following communication devices and
services:
• IP phones
• IP network connections
• Faxing between MiVoice Office 250 nodes through Mitel private networking over IP
IP resources are dynamically allocated where needed, which allows oversubscription. However,
resources can be reserved if necessary. For details, see Oversubscription , below.
IP Resources Defined
An Internet Protocol (IP) resource is a quantity of processing power that digital signal processors
(DSPs) on the system use for call processing functions. In terms of processing power consumed,
the “cost” of a DSP function varies, depending on whether the DSP resides on the Processor Module
(PM-1) or on the Processor Expansion Card (PEC-1) in the Base Server. IP resources are used for
DSP processing of speech vocoder and Caller ID functions.
Expanded System Capacity
To achieve greater system capacity, a new installation uses G.711 as the default vocoder instead of
G.729. Upgraded systems retain their previous configurations.
Mitel recommends that you re-evaluate the use of vocoders in call configurations after upgrading a
customer’s system to v2.0 or later. To improve voice quality and expand capacity, you should use
G.711 for internal IP phones and G.729 for external IP phones.
Oversubscription
Oversubscription allows you to program more phones than there are IP resources available on the
MiVoice Office 250. This capability is useful for systems that support numerous IP phones and IP
trunks and that utilize IP networking. The ability to oversubscribe results from the following
interrelated factors in a MiVoice Office 250 v2.0 or later platform:
• IP resources are required only for call-related activities, which allows the unreserved resources
to be pooled and shared for general use.
• IP resources are
not
reserved when an IP phone comes online, as was the case with earlier
MiVoice Office 250 software versions. Dynamic allocation of IP resources is the only method
available for allocation. You can no longer allocate IP resources statically in DB Programming.
However, in oversubscribed systems, you can use the Resource Reservation tool to dedicate
resources for specific IP devices. For details, refer to the

• The Resource Reservation tool allows you to reserve, or allocate, IP resources for only the
highest priority requirements. By default, IP resources are reserved for Emergency/911 access.
However, in some configurations, additional resources may be required to accommodate IP
gateways and/or IP trunks in order to reach an Emergency/911 operator. Otherwise, a customer
may want to reserve a limited number of IP resources for additional high-priority functions such
