• The licensing information is based on the media type. If using a USB key, a license file must be
generated and match the USB key. If using a serialized compact flash-type card, a license file
must be generated and match the compact flash-type card.
• How licenses are uploaded in DB Programming does not change regardless of using a USB
key or a compact flash-type card.
• After using a compact flash-type card for licensing information, replacing the compact flash-type
card requires re-licensing.
Upgrading
Although it is not necessary to change the licensing media when upgrading to v3.2 or later, if you
choose to do so, you will need one of the serialized compact flash-type cards listed in the part
numbers table on page 371. Note that there are different version memory cards for v3.2 and v4.0.
This is because the core Linux file system on the card changed in v4.0. It is possible to upgrade an
existing v3.2 card to v4.0, but it is not possible to downgrade an existing v4.0 card to v3.2.
Security
The serialized compact flash-type card or USB key uniquely identifies a system by storing a Mitel
Master License. Only the specific software license that has been digitally signed with the Master
License data is allowed to control the system. The card or key stores the essential components of
the software licensing scheme.
Licensing Integrity
The security mechanism (whether it be a serialized compact flash-type card or a USB key) also
ensures licensing integrity. When a system detects removal of its security mechanism, the system
disables audio for subsequent calls. When the audio is disabled, the system posts applicable alarms
to the LCD panel on the front of the unit chassis and to the LCD on the administrator phone. Alarm
#122 indicates that the security mechanism is missing, while Alarm #125 identifies the number of
minutes before the system initiates a reset.
When the mechanism is replaced and the correct serial number is detected by the system, the audio
is enabled and the reset countdown is aborted.
If the system powers up without the security mechanism in place, the user must reload the software
license through DB Programming.
USB Security Key for the PS-1/vPS-1
The system requires that a USB security key reside in the physical PS-1 unit. For vPS-1, the USB
key must reside in the physical computer running the virtual machine. However, the Base Server
does
not
need a USB security key. The administrator must upload the appropriate software license
to the PS-1/vPS-1. For procedural details about uploading a license, refer to the

.
NOTE
Once the core Linux files have been downloaded and upgraded for v4.0 or later, there is no
need to download them again for future v4.x or later system software upgrades.
