For installations where a large number of users will be using cordless accessories or installations
that might be challenging due to physical factors such as building construction or layout, a site
survey can help to ensure that optimum performance is obtained from the cordless accessories.
The survey will determine the locations of the 5330/5340/5360 phones with cordless
accessories, the survey will also identify any areas of the building that might present operational
problems.
A diagram of the building is essential for noting structural details and marking the locations of
the phones with cordless accessories, this diagram forms the basis of the completed site survey.
The site survey should also indicate how far the user can move away from the 5330/5340/5360
IP phone and still maintain a connection.
The Mitel document IP-DECT Wireless Solution … Site Survey Instructions For Mitel Systems
covers how to conduct a site survey for a complete DECT wireless system. This document can
be found on Mitel OnLine under Support/Technical Support/Product Documentation then look
in the Documentation Library. While this document is not intended to cover site surveys for
cordless accessories, it does contain information that can be useful for planning a site survey
for cordless accessories.
Note that because there is no synchronization between each Cordless Module, the density will
be less than that of a complete DECT wireless system.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
Depending on the particular installation, the following issues may need to be considered:

The Cordless Handset and Headset use the DECT protocol to support RF transmission
and as a result encryption as per the DECT standard is supported. However transmission
of voice over an RF link presents potential security issues that system administrators and
users should be aware of.

Electro-Magnetic Interference generated by the Cordless (DECT) Handset and Headset
might need to be considered in sensitive environments such as health care facilities, re-
search laboratories and some industrial sites since this interference could affect the
operation of critical equipment in the facility.
•
Electro-Magnetic Susceptibility needs to be considered since reception on the Cordless
(DECT) Handset and Headset may be affected by other RF devices. A site survey will
identify any potential sources of RF interference.
