These Operating Instructions describe all the
models and standard and optional equipment of
your vehicle that were available at the time of
going to print. Country-specific differences are
possible. Bear in mind that your vehicle may not
be equipped with all the functions described.
This also applies to safety-relevant systems and
functions.

Preparing for a journey
Visual and function check on the vehi-
cle exterior
Before you drive off, you should carry out the
following checks on the towing vehicle and the
trailer/semitrailer:

Check the vehicle for leaks.
X
Make sure that the licence plate, vehicle light-
ing, turn signal and brake lamps are not dirty
or damaged.

The lamp check function can assist in
checking the vehicle lighting:

Vehicles with a multifunction key
R
Vehicles with the "Remote Online" function

Check the condition of the contour markings
of all attachments and add-on equipment.

Check wheels and tyres (
Observe the following points in particular:
R
general condition
R
visible damage and cracks
R
tyre pressures
R
tyre tread depth
R
wheels are seated securely
Decoupling element between the engine and
exhaust pipe (example: tractor/semitrailer combi-
nation with BlueTec
®

Check the decoupling element of exhaust sys-
tem
:
for visible damage, e.g. cracks.
The decoupling element is a wear part and
must be checked regularly.

4 vehicles and BlueTec
®
5 vehicles:
in the event of damages, the decoupling ele-
ment must be replaced immediately.
BlueTec
®
6 vehicles: in the event of damage
and/or leakage, the decoupling element
must be replaced immediately. Traces of soot
on the decoupling element signify leakage.

Make sure that the vehicle is loaded correctly.
X
Make sure that the side gates and exterior
flaps are locked securely and not damaged.
X
Fold/push in and lock folding/extendable
steps before driving.
X
Fold the folding underride guard to the road
position.
X
Fit and secure the mudguard centre part
when operating the vehicle without a semi-
trailer.
X
Fold down the mud flaps.
X
In wintry conditions, remove snow and accu-
mulations of ice from the tractor vehicle and

Make sure that cables and compressed-air
lines are connected correctly (

Make sure that the semitrailer/trailer cou-
pling is locked and secured correctly.
Observe the separate instructions issued by
the manufacturer for the operation, care and
maintenance of the semitrailer/trailer cou-
pling.
Have all faults and damage rectified. If neces-
sary, have the causes determined and rectified
at a qualified specialist workshop.
