This chapter contains definitions of special terms and the specifica-
tions of the WLI-PCM.
Networking terms used in this manual are defined below.
■
ESS-ID
An identification code to classify computers on the wireless LAN into groups.
Computers can directly communicate with each other on the wireless LAN if they
have the same ESS-ID (i.e. they are in the same group) and are using the same
DS channel. Note that communication is possible only in the same group with
the same ESS-ID assigned. The ESS-ID is upper/lower case sensitive and can
consist of up to 32 alphanumeric characters, including the under bar (_).
■
I/O port address (Input/Output)
A port for communicating information between the CPU and peripheral devices.
An I/O port address is assigned to each device in order to determine which port is
used by which device.
■
IRQ (Interrupt Request)
Requests from all peripheral devices connected to your computer are processed
by the CPU, however, the CPU cannot estimate when a request is sent from
which device. If the CPU monitors all devices continuously, the monitoring time
becomes longer than the processing time, reducing performance. Therefore,
each device requests an "interruption" via an IRQ number with an urgent task for
the CPU. The CPU recognizes which device is requesting the interruption by its
IRQ number and processes the task. After the task is processed, the CPU
resumes its normal process.
■
LAN (Local Area Network)
A network constructed in a relatively small area such as a single building or cam-
pus. Generally based on a data rate of 10 ~100 Mbps.
