Key Concepts
Installation Not Used—Asset-centric
For many users, the asset is the only thing that really matters. Consider the case of a motor shop. Assets are in the
shop for maintenance or repair. They are not installed on anything, so the installation feature is not needed.
The shops often operate primarily from job numbers. In this example, we use the Job Number as the Asset Name then
assign other relevant attributes to the asset. Where the asset is stored within the facility is relevant, so a location-type
attribute can be assigned to identify the storage room, pallet, or other elements that can help shop staff find the asset
when needed.
The service ticket can contain all the information needed to track an asset while it is in the shop.
Tests can be run and data collected based only on the asset and its attributes.

Using another approach, a repair shop might prefer to define a job as an installation. Incoming assets can be installed
into the job then removed from the job when completed. Later, when that same asset returns, it would be installed
into a new job (installation). This approach allows the data from the previous job to be segregated from successive
jobs.
Additionally, other areas of a shop or process steps could be considered installations. Later, this data could be helpful
in recognizing issues with testing, or it might provide insight when tracking down specific tests that were done at a
particular stage of the process.
