(1). Removing Brushes:
(a). Remove the four screws that secure
the fan cover and brush access cover
to the generator end bell; remove fan
cover.
(b). Remove the screw from the lead
terminal of each brush set and lift
out the brush sets.
(2). Checking Brush Spring Tension:
(a). Remove brushes from starter/genera
tor.
(b). Cut a groove down the center of both
edges and across the bottom of a new
brush. When prepared in this man
ner, the brush will have a continuous
groove around three sides.
(c). Place a fine wire around the brush in
the groove; then insert the brush in
one of the brush holders. Tie the two
ends of the wire together to form a
loop and attach a fish-type spring
scale that is graduated in ounces.
(d). Raise the brush by the scale until the
lower end of the brush is even with
the bottom edge of the brush holder.
When in this position, the brush
spring tension should be between 32
and 48 ounces (907 and 1361 grams).
(e). Take an average of several readings.
If the spring tension is out of this
range, replace the spring.
(f). Measure the brush spring tension in
the remaining brush holders.
(3). Replacing Brushes and Preliminary
Seating (Ref. Figure 205).
