Fuel and Engine Exhaust Precautions
Fuel Requirements
V ehicles w ith catalytic converters m u st u se ONLY U N L E A D E D FU EL , w hich w ill reduce
exhaust em issions and keep spark plug fouling to a m inim um .
F uel w ith a low er rating could cause the em ission control system to lose effectiveness. It
could also cause engine knocking and serious engine dam age.
Your M azda w ill perform best w ith fuel listed in the table.

2 .5 -liter engine P rem iu m un lead ed fuel 91 [ (R +M )/2 m ethod] or above (96 RO N or above)
2 .0 -liter engine R egular un lead ed fuel 87 [ (R +M )/2 m ethod] or above (91 RO N or above)
*U.S. federal law requires that octane ratings b e posted on gasoline station pum ps.
2 .5 -lite r e n g in e
You m ay use a regular unleaded fuel w ith O ctane R ating from 87 to 90 (91 to 95 RO N ) but
this w ill slightly red u ce perform ance.
A CAUTION
• U S E ON LY U N L E A D E D FU EL.
L eaded fuel is harm ful to the catalytic converter. T he lead w ill accum ulate on the
oxygen sensor and the catalyst in side the converter. T his w ill result in a m alfunction
o f the em ission control system , causing poor perform ance.
• Your vehicle can only use oxygenated fuels containing no m ore than 10% ethanol by
volum e. D am age to y o u r vehicle m ay o ccu r w hen ethanol exceeds this
recom m endation, o r if the gasoline contains any m ethanol. Stop using gasohol o f any
kind if y o u r vehicle engine is perform ing poorly.
• N ever add fuel system additives. N ever add cleaning agents o th er than those specified
by M azda. O ther cleaning agents and additives m ay dam age the system . C onsult an
