SRS Air Bags

D epen ding on ly on the a ir bags f o r p ro tectio n du rin g an a ccid en t is dangerous.
A lone, a ir bags m ay n o t p re v e n t seriou s injuries. The appropriate a ir bags can be
expected to inflate only du rin g a fro n ta l, side o r n ear-fron tal collision o f a t least
m oderate fo rc e. Vehicle occu pants sh ou ld alw ays w ea r sea t belts.
C hild in the F ront Seat:
P la cin g a child, 12 y ea rs o r under, in the f r o n t se a t is dangerou s. The ch ild co u ld be
hit by a d eployin g a ir b ag a n d be seriously in ju red o r even killed. A sleepin g ch ild is
m ore likely to lean a g a in st the d o o r a n d be h it by the side a ir b ag in a m oderate, right-
side collision. W h en ever po ssib le, alw ays secure a ch ild 12 yea rs a n d un der on the
re a r sea t w ith an appropriate ch ild-restrain t system f o r the c h ild ’s age a n d size.
R ear-F acing C h ild-R estrain t System :
R ear-facin g c hild-restrain t system s on the fr o n t sea t are pa rticu la rly dangerou s.
The c h ild-restrain t system can be h it by a d eployin g a ir b ag a n d m o ved violently
backw ard resu ltin g in serious injury o r death to the child. N E V E R use a rear-facin g
child-restrain t system in the f r o n t sea t w ith an a ir bag th a t c ou ld deploy.
Seatin g Position w ith Front A ir Bags:
Sittin g too close to the a ir bag storage com partm en ts o r p la c in g han ds o r f e e t on them
is extrem ely dangerou s. F ront A ir bags inflate with g re a t fo r c e a n d speed. Serious
injuries c ou ld occu r i f som eone is too close. The d river sh o u ld alw ays h o ld onto only
the rim o f the steerin g w heel. The fr o n t seat p a ssen g er sh ou ld keep both f e e t on the
flo o r. F ron t sea t o ccu pan ts sh o u ld a d ju st th eir seats as f a r back as p o ssib le an d
alw ays sit u prigh t a g a in st the seatbacks w ith sea t belts w orn properly.
