CTRL Characters for Form Messages 

A 

form message

 is a display of characters that allows the operator to enter information into a 

specific field on the DOS terminal. See “Form Messages” later in this chapter. 

Control characters for forced form messages are: 

a, c, g, q, s, w, i, k and o 

See Appendix C, “Code Tables and Character Sets”, for a full listing of LDS Plus control codes 
for form messages. 

CTRL Characters for Non-Form Messages 

A 

non-form message

 is a message that does not include data input fields. Non-form messages can 

be either inbound or outbound. See “Non-Form Messages” later in this chapter.  

Control characters for forced non-form messages are: 

A, C, G, Q, S, W, I, K, O, and Y

CTRL Characters and the Beep Pattern 

A DOS terminal has a beeper for calling the operator's attention to certain occurrences. The 
beeper is an additional means of communication between the host computer and the DOS terminal 
operator. This communication frees up the operator's eyes to focus on the job without having to 
look at the screen. 

See also Chapter 5, “Expanded Functions”.  Many expanded functions generate terminal beeps. 

Example 

You can set the beep pattern so that it beeps three times for an error message and two times for a 
form message. 

You must select the appropriate control character and a beep pattern character to set the beep 
pattern with a form message or set it with certain expanded functions. 

The following form message illustrates the location of the control character and beep pattern 
character for setting the beep pattern:
