Type (TYPE)
The
type
character indicates to the network device or host computer whether a message is:
Inbound
A single character that allows the host computer to determine if this is a
message from a DOS terminal or a protocol message from the network
device.
Outbound
A single character that allows the network device to determine if it should
transmit the message to a DOS terminal or if it is a protocol message
requiring some different action.
Protocol
One or two characters that allow the host computer or network device to
determine if the message is a protocol message or a text message being
received from or transmitted to a DOS terminal.
Location of the Type character in an outbound message containing data:
SOL ID1 ID2
TYPE
CTRL N/EF SEQ

as the Type. The letter M is always uppercase. The M in the
Type location indicates to the host that this is a message from a DOS terminal and is not a
protocol message.
Here is an example of an inbound message type:

from terminal ID 14 to the host computer.
