Transferring to and from the chair
The Canto Nxt is a wheelchair for users with various
handicaps. Transfers from the wheelchair to, for
example, a bed, toilet or shower and vice versa can
be made in various ways. The extent to which the
wheelchair user is able to cooperate determines how
he or she should be lifted. Both active and passive
transfers are possible with the Canto Nxt, with the aid
of the care provider or using a lift.
N.B.:
always engage the brake before transferring
to or from the chair.
Forwards transfer
n
Fold up the footrests or fold away the legrests.
n
Set the chair angle at a negative value, if necessary.
Sideways transfer
Remove the sides and armrests, if required.
Tip:
during a transfer from a passive lift into a Canto
Nxt, first tip the wheelchair without user so that the
user can be optimally positioned in the chair.
Tackling obstacles
n
Press the push-handles downwards and push with
your foot on the step tube.
n
Push the wheelchair onto the obstacle and remove
your foot from the step tube.
n
Push the wheelchair further and lift the back
wheels over the obstacle by the push-handles.
You can go up steps forwards but it is better to go
down steps backwards.
N.B.:
keep your speed under control on gentle
slopes.

Brakes
The brakes of the Canto Nxt are correctly
adjusted ex factory. If your Canto Nxt is a
push wheelchair, it has drum brakes with a
brake lever. The central foot brake is located
at the bottom of the wheelchair at the back.
When the bracket is up the wheelchair brake
is disengaged; when it is down the brake is
engaged.
It may be the case that over the years the
braking power decreases or is no longer
uniform for both wheels. You should then
adjust the brakes.
n
Loosen the locknut (A).
n
Turn the adjustment bolt (B) outwards*.
n
Check that the braking power is adequate.
n
Adjust it again if necessary.
n
Tighten the locknut (A).
n
Repeat this on the other side, if required.
* If you turn the adjustment bolt too far outwards, the
brake will be engaged in the neutral position too. The
wheels must turn freely in the neutral position.
