7 TROUBLE
SHOOTING.
7.1 THE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM.
It is difficult to create a hydraulic trouble shooting procedure as the possibilities are
endless. We therefore include our standard hydraulic maintenance / trouble shooting
guide.
FAULT DIAGNOSIS.
The following points are given for the use of persons engaged in fault finding procedures.
In general the remedial action is self-evident from the possible causes quoted.
a) GENERAL
POINTS.
1. Emulsification.
If the hydraulic oil is a yellowish colour, this indicates emulsification of the oil has taken
place, caused by contamination with water. The hydraulic system and tank must be
drained, cleaned and flushed before being refilled with clean oil of the correct grade.
2. Dirt.
Dirt is a major enemy of the hydraulic system and its presence could necessitate the
complete renewal of one or more hydraulic units, or just as easily cause small irritating
faults.
3. Hydraulic Hoses.
Only makers recommended flexible hoses must be fitted as replacements.
The following safety precautions should be taken when performing maintenance or
repairs to the hydraulic system:-
1. Before disconnecting any pipe or component, make sure that it is thoroughly clean and
pipes have been removed, clean them by means of an air hose or spirit and seal of the
ends, removing such seals only when the pipe is to be refitted.
2. Do not push rag into the ends of the pipes, since it could easily be forgotten, or at best
would leave a lint deposit, instead use either white masking tape which should be bound
around the pipe fitting nuts, or alternatively, if available, plastic blanking caps.
3. When components are removed, make sure that their ports ate sealed either with
masking tape or plastic blanking caps.
