software. Follow the directions below to complete the activity.
In this activity, you will construct the fischertechnik model, Welding Robot. You will create a control
program in the next lesson to run this model. Refer to the illustration on the following pages as you
construct this model.
Start building with the black base unit and add the blocks to it to form the mount for the robot arm as
1.
shown in the illustration. The number in front of the “x” is the quantity of that item used in this step.
The red horseshoe shaped pieces are for holding the wires in place. The controls and sensors used
in the fischertechnik system have wires with small plugs on the ends to connect to the interface.
Assemble the three switches into their locations and also the main gear, as shown in the illustration.
2.
Assemble the motor and gear unit, the three yellow welding stations, and the welding arm mount as
3.
shown in the illustration.
Assemble the welding arm and the lens tip lamp to the end of it. Move the red cable clip shown on
4.
the bottom of the arm to the top in the middle of it. When you wire the lamp, run the wire on top of
the arm for safety.
Assemble the worm gear to the motor by sliding gear item number 2 through the gear unit and
5.
into one side of the worm gear. Next, slide the four-toothed gear item number 2 through the red
mounting block and into the other side of the worm gear and then mount the welding arm that you
assembled in Step 4 to its mount, as shown in the illustration. At this point, the worm gear should be
meshed with the table gear. If it isn’t, you must correct it before proceeding.
Insert the interface onto the four corner mounting blocks and connect the wiring to the interface unit
6.
as shown in the circuit diagram illustration. Next to each red and green wire are the approximate
lengths in metric and standard units. Pay attention to the color location of each red and green
connector on the device and on the interface. At this point make sure the red block on the welding
arm is depressing switch I1. If it is not, slide the arm mounts over until the red button on the switch
is in. Also, make sure the four-toothed gear is positioned over switch I2.
Make sure you’ve made all the plug connections on the interface (including power). Place the wires
7.
in the red clips, as described, before running them in the most direct route to the interface. Feel free
to route the wires in a more convenient direction if your wires are shorter because of repairs. Just
make sure they are making the same electrical connection needed.
NOTE
: You will use this model in the next activity. Keep it in a safe place.
