Assuming that the FDR is locked onto a stream of input flight data, placing the cursor on FDR:
Word Monitor in the Main Menu and pressing SELECT brings up the Word Monitor Menu
(Figure 4
2) on the PI front panel display. This screen displays 4 rows of the selected 16-bit
word contained in 4-bit segments in Subframe 1 through Subframe 4. Each Subframe display
can be set to OCT (Octal), Decimal (DEC), Hexadecimal (HEX), or OFF mode by setting the
cursor on the mode tag (at the right hand side of each display row) using the up and down ar-
row keys. Once the mode tag is highlighted, the user can cycle through the modes using the
SELECT key. Each row that is not in the OFF mode displays four bits of the selected word
contained in subframes 1 through 4 of the flight data. This data is updated in 4-second inter-
vals.
Upon entry to the Word Monitor Menu, a cursor appears in the bottom row (numbered 0
through 9) of the menu. The word number selection field is located at the top of the menu.
The user can modify selection of the word number by moving the cursor among the digits on
the bottom row using the right and left arrow keys. Pressing the SELECT key, will bring the
digit selected into the word number selection field at the top of the menu. Note that no more
than three digits will fit into the word number selection field. Also, the user can delete one or
more digits from the word number select field by pressing the red DELETE key as required.
The word number selection is deleted by pressing the DELETE key.

COPY MENU
The user cannot enter this menu unless a disk drive is in place at the PCMCIA slot in the bot-
tom of the PI. Attempting to do otherwise will result in the message, “
No Disk Present
”. This
menu allows the user to copy FDR data onto the disk drive in several modes: FULL COPY,
PARTIAL COPY, COPY FROM MARKER, and COPY FROM LAST COPY. When this menu
is entered, the PI requires the name of the file to which the data is to be copied.
4.5.1
File Name Entry Field (FILE ID)
There is a file name entry field (FILE ID) near the top of the menu. The rest of the menu is
taken up primarily by an array of selection characters. A cursor will appear over one of them.
the user can select characters by using the up, down, right, and left arrow keys to move the
cursor. When the user presses the SELECT key, the chosen character will be copied to the
FILE ID field. To remove character(s) from the FILE ID field, the up, down, right, and left ar-
row keys are used to select each character and pressing the red DELETE key removes the
character from the field.
The FILE ID is
11
characters long. Only (up through) the first 8 characters are used in the file-
name itself. Also, characters in the FILE ID that are not legal DOS filename characters will be
changed to zeros. But the entire FILE ID will be copied into the file ID exactly as it appears on
the menu. The FILE ID is a field in the file header that can be recovered when the file is ana-
lyzed.
