INTRODUCTION
The L
−
3 Communications Aviation Recorder’s Portable Interface (PI) was developed as a
hand-held Ground Support Equipment for checking the operating status, monitoring (Flight
Data) and retrieving (Voice and Flight Data) from the FA2100 family of CVR, FDR and com-
bination CVDR Recorders.
This manual provides a detailed functional description and general operating instructions for
the Portable Interface unit, Part Numbers 17TES0043. It covers all four basic operational
modes for using the PI with either a FA2100 CVR, FA2100 FDR, FA2100 CVDR, or in Simu-
lated CVR Mode.
The PI is also used to facilitate bench testing of the FA2100 CVR’s. For data retrieval and test
procedures pertaining to a specific Model Recorders, refer to the appropriate Testing and Trou-
bleshooting section of the FA2100 FDR (ATA 31-30-03), the FA2100 CVR (ATA 23-70-04), or
the FA2100 CVDR (ATA 23-70-07) Component Maintenance Manuals (CMMs).
To support data retrieval operations, the PI contains a PC Card (PCMCIA) slot located in the
bottom end of the unit under the end cap. This slot is used in conjunction with a supplied Type
III, PC Card Hard Drive for the storage of retrieved voice or flight data files. Files are stored on
the PC Card Hard Drives which then can be down-loaded to, and processed by using the
ROSE software running on the ROC Ground Support Equipment (GSE). Refer to the ROSE/
RI Operating Manual, Part Number 165E1696-04, for detailed instructions for downloading re-
corder data files into ROSE.

MAINTENANCE PHILOSOPHY
There are no calibration, no periodic maintenance requirements, or diagnostic testing required
for the Portable Interface Unit. If the PI is not functioning properly, return it to L-3 Aviation Re-
corders for repair.
