COLD WEATHER OPERATION
COLD WEATHER OPERATION INFORMATION
If the temperature drops, it is difficult to start the engine and the coolant may freeze; therefore proceed as fol-
lows.
FUEL AND LUBRICANT
Replace fuel and oil, using low viscosity types, for all components.
For details concerning viscosity, see “RECOMMENDED FUEL, COOLANT, AND LUBRICANT”.
COOLANT

WARNING
• Coolant is toxic. Avoid contact with the eyes and skin. If it should get into your eyes or on your
skin, wash it off with large amounts of fresh water and see a doctor immediately.
• When handling the cooling water containing coolant that has been drained during changing the
coolant or repairing the radiator, contact your Komatsu distributor or request a qualified company
to perform the operation. Coolant is toxic, so never pour it into drainage ditches or drain it onto the
ground surface.
NOTICE
Komatsu recommends the use of Non-Amine Engine Coolant (AF-NAC) as coolant.
Non-Amine Engine Coolant (AF-NAC) is already diluted with distilled water, so it is not flammable.
For details on the coolant change interval and the density of Non-Amine Engine Coolant (AF-NAC), see “METH-
OD FOR CLEANING INSIDE OF COOLING SYSTEM”.
BATTERY

WARNING
• The battery generates flammable gas. Do not expose the battery to naked flames.
• Electrolyte is hazardous. In case of contact with the eyes or the skin, wash with plenty of running
water and consult a doctor.
• Battery electrolyte dissolves paint. In case of contact with the machine body, wash immediately with
water.
• If the battery electrolyte is frozen, do not charge the battery or start the engine with a different pow-
er source. There is danger that the battery may explode.
• The battery electrolyte is toxic. Do not let it flow into drainage ditches or spray it on to the ground
surface.
When the ambient temperature drops, the capacity of the battery will also drop. If the battery charging rate is
low, the battery electrolyte may freeze. Maintain the battery charging rate as close as possible to 100%. Insulate
it against cold temperature to ensure the machine can be started easily the next morning.
REMARK
When possible, control the electrolyte, measure the gravity of the electrolyte and calculate the charging rate
from the following conversion table.
