GENERAL
A plastic-encased cable provides suppor t
for the door in the open position, a hand-
hold for passengers, and a means of closing
t h e d o o r f r o m i n s i d e t h e a i r p l a n e . A hy -
draulic dampener per mits the door to lower
g radually during opening. It is impor tant
t h a t n o t m o r e t h a n o n e p e r s o n b e o n t h e
airstair door at a time as excessive weights
could cause str uctural damage to the door.
Dual Door Cables with One
Detachable (Optional)
Dual stair assist cables are available as an
option (Figure 1-8). Door assist cables pro-
v i d e p a s s e n g e r s a way t o s t a b i l i z e t h e m -
selves when going up or down the stairs. The
forward assist cable is easily detachable to
provide more room for loading large bag-
gage or cargo into the air plane.
Airstair Locking Mechanism
The door locking mechanism is operated by
either of the two ver tically staggered han-
dles, one inside and the other outside the
door. The inside and outside handles are me-
chanically interconnected.
When either handle is rotated per placard
instr uctions, two latch bolts at each side of
the door, and two latch hooks at the top of
the door, lock into the doorframe to secure
the airstair door. A button adjacent to the
door handle must be depressed before the
handle can be rotated to open the door. For
security of the air plane on the g round, the
door can be locked with a key.
To secure the airstair door inside, rotate the
handle clockwise as far as it will go. The re-
lease button should pop out, and the handle
should be pointing down. Check the security
of the airstair door by attempting to rotate
t h e h a n d l e c o u n t e r c l o c k w i s e w i t h o u t d e -
p r e s s i n g t h e r e l e a s e b u t t o n ; t h e h a n d l e
should not move.
