6.2 Message and Terminator
This section provides terminology and details concerning communication between
the personal computer (controller) and the tester (devices).
6.2.1 Messages
Information sent and received between the controller and the device is referred to as
a “device message.” Device messages include commands sent from the controller to
the device and responses sent from the device to the controller.
Each message consists of a message header and data sections.
Command
Commands include settings and queries.
Setting
Used to execute a specified function of a device and to alter settings.
Query
Used to inquire about the settings and status of a device.
A query ends its message with the question mark (?) at the end.
Response
Messages sent from the device to the controller or another device are responses.
A response tells the controller the status of the device or a measured value.
