Even when both fins are locked, the TRAC Stabilizer control system should be turned to
permit monitoring of temperature and level in the hydraulic system.
Digital Stabilizer System Basic Maintenance
Once a month check the hydraulic fluid level in the reservoir located Port side,
Amidships in the Engine Room.
ISO 32 oil is recommended for colder climates and ISO
46 oil for warmer climates.
The reservoir filter is made by PHA Products, Model SPE-15-BTA-10 and the filter part
number is P56-4047. If your cruising itinerary will take you into waters
consistently
above 80ºF (26.6ºC), contact American Bow Thruster for additional recommendations.
The temperature, as shown through the sight glass on the reservoir, should show between
100ºF and 130ºF, but only after at least one hour of Stabilizer operation. A warning alarm
will sound if the hydraulic fluid temperature reaches 160ºF and the system will shut down
at 180ºF.
Each Stabilizer fin has a zinc anode which should be inspected at regular intervals and
replaced as needed. See Spare Parts List for part number.
The Vickers V10 Power Takeoff (PTO) pumps do not require any periodic maintenance.
The hydraulic fluid in the Stabilizer reservoir is cooled by a heat exchanger which is
mounted on the Forward bulkhead, Port side in the Engine Room next to the hydraulic
reservoir, and is powered by a Jabsco hydraulic cooling pump. The raw water for the heat
exchanger is piped directly from a dedicated raw water intake sea strainer located under
the Stabilizer reservoir and discharged directly overboard. The zincs in the heat
exchanger need to be examined every 250 hours (same schedule as propulsion engines).
Remove the zincs and tap with a hammer. If the zinc flakes apart, install a new 3/8” NPT
zinc, available at most marine supply stores.
CAUTION
Use ONLY ISO 32 or ISO 46 oil in the reservoir– NOTHING ELSE.
