8G-47
• If pressure drops off before reaching range, steering
relief valve or charge pump may be at fault.
10.Open tester load valve.
STEERING CIRCUIT TEST
Perform charge pump flow test before completing this
test. Flow meter hose connections remain the same as
the charge pump flow test see (Steering Circuit Flow
Test (Section 8N).
11. Open tester load valve, set the parking brake, start
the engine and advance the engine speed to high
idle speed.
12.Turn steering wheel completely to the right and
then to the left until it stops, and hold each posi-
tion. Record pressure reading in each postion.
Conclusion
• Relief pressure should be 1160-psi (7992 kPa) +/-
10%.
• If steering relief valve pressure is not in the specified
range in one or both positions, proceed with Step
12.
13.At the steering cylinder, remove both hydraulic
lines, plug the lines and cap the cylinder ports.
14.Set the parking brake, start the engine and
advance the throttle to high idle speed.
15.Turn the steering wheel to the right, then to the left
until it stops and hold, record pressure readings.
• If relief pressure is 1160-psi (7992 kPa) +/-
10%, steering cylinder is at fault.
• If relief pressure is not within range in one or
both directions, the steering valve may be
faulty.
16.After performing Step 14, hold steady hand pres-
sure on the steering wheel against the stop and
observe steering wheel rotation. if steering wheel
makes more than 1 revolution in 30 seconds, the
steering valve is leaking internally.
• If steering wheel rotates excessively against
the stop in Step 15, steering valve is at fault.
17.Shut off engine.
18.Disconnect and remove flow meter and connect
hose to traction pump.
19.Restore hose connections on steering cylinder.
NOTICE
The steering relief valve can only be replaced as an
assembly.
