BASIC OPERATION

IGEP

RADAR  SENSOR  ORION  can  be  operated  by  supplying  +5Vdc  to  JP1  connector  and

programming the DDS Modulator through SPI link available whether on JC2 or JC3 connectors.

IF signal can be obtained also on any of both connectors and you can also get sampled data of
this IF signal through the same SPI interface as the one used to program DDS Modulator.

8.1

RADAR ARCHI

The  VCO  included  on  the  transmitter  generates  a  Radiofrequency  carrier  in  the  vicinity  of
12GHz. This frequency can be controlled and modulated by applying the correct voltage to the
input of the VCO (accessible only on demand). The generated signal is then frequency doubled,
thus generating a signal in the vicinity of 24GHz (World-Wide ISM Band covered). This signal is
then  transmitted  by  the  antenna  and  a  part of  it  is used  as  Local  Oscillator on  the  receiving
mixer (MIX). The  low  level reflected waves  captured by the receiving antenna are fed to the
LNA and once amplified they are mixed with the local oscillator signal. The mixer output will be
a  signal  with  a  frequency  that  is  the  difference  between  the  respective  frequencies  of  the
received and transmitted signals. This IF signal is then amplified. From this IF signal it can be
obtained  information  about  the  speed  and/or  position  of  different  targets,  by  applying  the
adequate modulations and processing algorithms.

8.2

RADAR PRECAUTIONS

Please be aware that any manipulation to the shielding and the micro-strip circuit

can reduce

drastically the Radar performance

due to the high sensitivity of this kind of circuits. A part of

our design success is the perfect matching shielding done in our factory. Warranty will be lost
if this area has been manipulated.

Different  radar  applications  need  different  antenna  patterns

  and  characteristics,  and  the

performance  is  highly  dependent  on  the  used  antenna.  If  you  need  other  antenna
characteristics please contact Radar Support and we will study the possibility to implement a
personalized development:

: This signal is the voltage tuning that can be applied to modulate the frequency of the VCO.

Care has to be taken to do not damage this pin (Maximum voltage 6Volts). THIS PIN IS ONLY
OPERATIONAL UNDER DEMAND.
