Chapter 17 Troubleshooting
Description:
Transfer ribbon gets wrinkled.
Possible Causes and Suggested Remedies:
• Media misalignment.
- Are all guides positioned so as to guide the media closely along
the printer’s center section?
- Is the media supply roll pressed as far in on the media supply
hub as possible?
• Ribbon path obstructed.
- Check that nothing obstructs the path of the transfer ribbon, for
example cables to the printhead or label taken sensor.
• Wrong or uneven printhead pressure.
- Check that the pressure arm is center-aligned in the relation to
the media path, see Chapter 8.9.
- Check the printhead pressure, see Chapter 8.9. Decrease the
pressure somewhat and test for both wrinkles and printout con-
trast. You may need to feed out 25-50 cm of ribbon (1-2 ft.)
before you can see any effect.
• Bad ribbon assist roller adjustment.
- Check the adjustment of the ribbon assist roller, see Chapter
8.10. Do not change the adjustment before you have performed
all other checks mentioned above.
• Bad ribbon supply hub alignment.
- Check that the ribbon supply hub is center-aligned in relation to
the transfer ribbon as described in Chapter 7.2.
Description:
Transfer ribbon breaks.
Possible Causes and Suggested Remedies:
• Wrong brand of ribbon.
- Check if the transfer ribbon is an approved brand. If not, recom-
mend the customer to use approved brands only.
• Bad ribbon load.
- Check that the ribbon is loaded so it runs above the LSS
guides.
• Wrong paper type setup.
- Check that the printer is set up correctly for the type of thermal
transfer ribbon in use, see Installation & Operation manual.
• Wrong printhead voltage.
- Check printhead voltage P24, see Chapter 17.5.
• Wrong brake torque or broken brake spring.
- Check the brake torque of the ribbon unwind and rewind shafts,
see Chapters 7.2 and 7.3.
- If the transfer ribbon is loaded so the spools rotate in the wrong
direction (that is c.w. instead of c.c.w.), the brake springs may
break. This typically occurs if the operator uses transfer ribbons
with the ink on the wrong side. Replace the damaged unit.
