. Ethernet Network Glossary
Wired connection:
a wired connection is when a device is physically connected to a router or Ethernet port
with a cable. This is the most common method of connecting to the Internet and local network for desktop
computers.
Ethernet port:
an Ethernet port is what an Ethernet cable is plugged into when a wired connection is used.
Router:
a router is a specially designed device that, using its software and hardware, routes information
from the Internet to a network. It is also sometimes called a gateway.
IP (Internet Protocol) address:
a IP address is a unique number assigned to a player so that the router
can identify the player on the network. It is like a phone number for the player. Having this unique address
allows the router to speak to the player, and therefore send/receive data.
MAC Address:
a MAC address a fixed hardware address for the player. Known this information is
sometimes important when using a cable modem connection. To find the mac address of the player. Please
refer to Web server (page 73).
DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol):
the DHCP is a way for the player to automatically be
configured to access the network and/or Internet connection. DHCP is usually automatically configured on a
router. This is usually the quickest and easiest way of establishing a connection to the Internet. If it is not
sure that the router is setup to use DHCP, it may be necessary to contact the IPS’s (Internet Service
