Reviewing Elastic Storage System 3000 location guidelines
Consult these guidelines when you plan the location of Elastic Storage System 3000 and any existing
Elastic Storage System in your environment, including any IBM Spectrum Scale client or protocol node.
ESS 3000 contains two I/O server canister. Each ESS 3000 cluster consists of the following components:
• One or more ESS 3000 systems – each system requires 2U (standard rack units) in a rack
• One EMS node - requires 2U space in a rack
• 1 GbE or 10 GbE Network switch for management network - requires 1U in rack
• 100Gb High Speed IB or Ethernet network for internode communication – requires 1U space in rack
ESS 3000 model
The model contains two removable server canisters that have two CPUs.
• 5141-AF8 IBM Elastic Storage System 3000 that comes with a 3-year warranty.
Memory options for a new ESS 3000
Elastic Storage System 3000 uses the same memory features that control the initial amount of memory
and subsequent memory upgrades.
Each CPU has twelve DIMM slots, for a total of 24 DIMM slots per server canister, which means 48 DIMM
slots per enclosure. You can install two distinct memory configurations in those 48 DIMM slots.
Initially, every ESS 3000 ships with the ACG1 feature:

Maximum per enclosure
ACG1
768 GB base cache memory (twenty-four 32GB
DIMMs - 6 per CPU)

Memory upgrade options
You can order the following ACGB feature to upgrade to more memory at any time. ACGB can be ordered
as either an MFI (factory install) or by post-sale MES upgrade (field install).

One upgrade feature ACGB can be added to an existing ACG1 feature to fully populate all memory DIMM
slots.
Only one of the configurations has a DIMM in every available DIMM slot.
Valid locations to install each DIMM are shown in Table 4 on page 23.
Memory configurations for each server canister
The following table shows the available memory configuration for each server canister. To ensure proper
cooling and steady flow of air from the five fan modules in each server canister, "dummy" DIMMs must be
inserted in any slot that does not contain a memory module.
