Chapter 3: Installing the 5500 Express IP Control Unit
This section provides steps for connecting your 5500 Express IP Control Unit.
Before You Begin
Before you install the 5500 Control Unit, ensure that you complete
• Your floor plan
• Order additional cables, baluns, and cable adapters as required.
• Also, complete the configuration worksheet located in “Configuration
Note: Do not use the Utility diskette during installation. For information on
the Utility diskette, refer to “Using the IBM 5500 Utility Diskette” on page
179.
Installation Process
Although each installation can vary, the following processes are similar:
• Unpack the unit. Review the hardware list, and all cables and parts
required for installation.
• Place the workstations and the 5500 Control Unit in their appropriate
location and attach the twinax breakout box to the unit.
• Attach your client workstations to the 5500 Control Unit and any modems
to the RS-232 connectors.
• Plug in the power cord to power on the unit
Note: To prevent the 5500 Control Unit from being accidentally powered
off, you must plug and unplug the power cord to power the unit on and
off. No power switch is available.
• Verify the boot sequence and check the LED flash sequences.
Tools
No special tools are needed to install the 5500 Express IP Control Unit.
Step 1: Reviewing the Hardware List
Verify that you have the following:
• IBM 5500 Control Unit
• Twinax breakout box (sometimes referred to as a “brick”) with 25 pin D-
Shell connector
• IBM 5250 Express TCP/IP Diskette
• IBM 5500 Utility Diskette
